DPA 4007 Studio Microphone

DPA 4007

The DPA 4007 was derived from Bruel & Kjaer's line of world class measurement microphones. It is made in Denmark. The capsule is a slightly smaller than standard version of a Bruel & Kjaer measurement capsule with a polymer protected nickel diaphragm.

It is designed to be able to take extreme levels of up to 155 dB SPL peak while maintaining a self noise of only 24 dB A weighted. The response is uniform to 40 kHz. Because of the heritage and excellent performance of this microphone it is popular as a phantom powered measurement microphone in addition to its intended use as a studio microphone.

Since the 4007 uses a measurement microphone type capsule it has great environmental stability. The sensitivity changes only 0.02 dB per degree C.

The 4007 has a capsule diameter of 12 mm and requires a special adapter to fit calibrators. It comes packed in a nice hard case with stand adapter and windscreen.

Of course the 4007 is supplied with a factory calibration chart with response curve. Each 4007 microphone comes with a stand adapter, windscreen, calibration chart, and hard case for $1699.00 plus shipping. Ground shipping in the 48 states is $22.00 for one mic or $33.00 for two.

SoundFirst SF101

The SoundFirst SF101 is a high stability precision omnidirectional phantom powered measurement or instrument microphone made in Colorado USA. Unlike most microphones in its price range it uses a real precision measurement microphone capsule by ACO with titanium diaphragm.

Most microphones sold for measurement use in the under $1500 price range have plastic diaphragms. The combination of the diaphragm materials and the construction techniques used result in sensitivity to temperature extremes. Worse, a single exposure to high temperatures such as found in a car in summer, can result in significant permanent changes in response. Some manufacturers attempt to minimise these effects by "pre-aging" the microphone capsules before final assembly and calibration, but this does not remove the inherant instability of these capsules.

The SF101 instead takes the approach used in all the best and most expensive measurement microphones in the world, and uses a real precision measurement microphone capsule which was designed from the ground up for extreme stability under environmental extremes. These same capsules have been exposed to the weather on a mountain top for years and still meet their new specifications. Their sensitivity changes only 0.01 dB per degree C over the entire temperature range from -10 to +50 degrees C (14 to 122 degrees F). Exposure to 55 degrees C (131 degrees F) and 95% humidity (non condensing) changes the sensitivity less than 0.1 dB. Long term stability at 20 degrees C (68 degrees F) is greater than 250 years for a 1 dB change.

The SF101 has a capsule diameter of 13.2 mm (0.520") so it fits IEC Standard calibrators for nominal 1/2" microphones. Few measurement microphones sold in its price range are the standard diameter making it difficult to calibrate them.

To protect your investment in this precision instrument, it comes packed in a genuine Pelican 1060 Micro Case. This lifetime warranty waterproof case is rubber lined and filled with foam to securely hold your microphone and protect it from most normal conditions. This is a far more rugged and expensive case than other measurement microphones are supplied with, but I felt it was worth it to protect this high class microphone.

Of course the SF101 is supplied with an Individual Frequency Response Curve (IFRC) on the complete microphone, calibration data, and the original ACO factory response curve on the capsule. Each SF101 microphone comes with a stand adapter, IFRC, and genuine Pelican case for $750.00 plus shipping. Ground shipping in the 48 states is $20.00 for one mic or $30.00 for two.

I have a few SF101 where the original ACO factory response curve on the capsule has been lost. They are otherwise new and complete and come with an Individual Frequency Response Curve on the complete microphone, calibration data, stand adapter, and genuine Pelican case for $700.00 plus shipping.

Josephson C550H Test Microphone

Josephson C550H

The Josephson C550H is a precision omnidirectional phantom powered measurement microphone made in the USA. The diaphragm has been specially aged for stability. This is the mic that many manufacturers copied the body from, but not the performance.

These mics are all matched for sensitivity at the factory, and all C550H will have the same sensitivity. They are individually serial numbered and have a calibration sticker on them.

You can download the manufacturer's datasheet here.

Josephson offers a 5 year warranty on all their microphones.

The C550H comes in a zipper bag, and is supplied with a shock mount in a foam lined box for $375.00 plus shipping. The C550H can be ordered with an Individual Frequency Response Curve (IFRC) for $425.00 plus shipping. Ground shipping in the 48 states is $16.00 for one mic or $24.00 for two.

Wireless

Test & Measurement

Lectrosonics TM400 Digital Hybrid wireless Test and Measurement system allows you to use you favorite phantom powered measurement microphone (see below) wireless with a TEF or any other test and measurement platform. The secret to the performance is their application of digital technology to eliminate the need for the companders used by all analog wireless systems. The companders while they increase the audible dynamic range don't allow the level of accuracy needed in a test system. The Digital Hybrid combines the best features of analog wireless like range with greatly improved performance due to their patent pending digital technology.

The Lectrosonics TM400 Digital Hybrid Test and Measurement system consists of a UH400TM Test and Measurement transmitter with a R400A receiver. Download the TM400 system brochure here.

Read the article from the Syn-Aud-Con newsletter on this system.

The UH400TM is the Test and Measurement version of a plug-on transmitter that will convert any low impedance wired mic into a wireless mic. It can supply 5, 15 or 48 volt phantom power to mics that require phantom. If you have a phantom powered measurement microphone that you love but wished it was wireless, the UH400TM is your answer. You will get virtually the same measurement as when the mic was used wired.

Click for a manual on the UH400TM plug-on transmitter.

To turn your favorite wired measurement microphone into a wireless measurement microphone with insignificant loss of precision get the UH400TM. It sells for $884.00 plus $15.00 shipping. Microphone is not included. Additional quantities in the same order ship at half rate.

Purchase UH400TM Transmitter using PayPal. (PayPal Confirmed shipping address in USA only.)

The R400A is an affordable single channel Digital Hybrid receiver.

Click here for a manual on the R400A single channel receiver.

If you only need one or two channels of receiver, then the R400A may be ideal for you. The R400A sells for $643.00 plus $15.00 shipping. Additional quantities in the same order ship at half rate.
